Torfhús Beer Spa

Mývatn, Iceland

Inspired by the vernacular turf houses of Iceland, a grassy mound is peeled open to the primordial landscape. Externally, this gesture forms a green roof terrace. Internally, it weaves a sensory expedition into the very soil of Mývatn.

The ground floor is home to the existing restaurant and brewery, while the beer spa is nestled underground. Natural lighting, organic forms, and a warm material palette foster serenity, while back-of-house operations have been organised to provide a seamless visitor experience. The green roof and sunken spa capitalise on the thermal properties of soil. The roof design also reduces stormwater management and benefits local biodiversity. The use of prefabricated glulam timber beams minimises on-site disruption to the ongoing business of the hotel, while a modular design considers future expansion.
