Kiln Gardens
Chiang Saen, Thailand
Himavanta has been commissioned to design a local landmark that celebrates Thai coffee, and Chiang Saen’s panoramic hillside views. Set within a seasonal flower garden, the building emerges as a monolith from the clay-rich earth. The landscape design encourages exploration, with meandering paths that follow the site’s contours, while shaded terraces provide places for pause.
A perforated brick façade wraps the structure, referencing both the nearby ancient ruins and the intricate geometries of traditional textile patterns. This screen serves both a poetic and functional role, filtering light, minimizing solar gain, and enclosing back-of-house areas while maintaining visual porosity. Vertical circulation is externally expressed, leading to a roof terrace that serves as a visual waypoint from afar. Inside, the café offers a warm and airy oasis, where seamless circulation and natural materials define the experience.
(Himavanta is also responsible for the interior design, ensuring seamless interior and exterior integration.)
