Aperture 360°

Bangkok, Thailand

A camera obscura is an intuitive way of understanding the principles of photography. Aperture 360° speaks of these principles, but also sheds light on the mechanisms within our eyes, the way we observe our world. This proposal for the 2021 Photo Bangkok Festival is both a photographic device, and a tool for contemplating the relationship between image, observer and environment.

Aperture 360° is an alien. Its textured skin infinitely multiplies and reflects its surroundings. This layer of ‘bubble foil’ also reflects solar infrared to prevent overheating. A rupture in the foil reveals a second skin, and an eye. Light enters through its lens, filling the space with a flipped image of the environment. A visitor becomes re-enveloped in a virtual rendering of their surroundings. Aperture 360° is on wheels, and can fully rotate to see in all directions, and to avoid the glare of sunlight throughout the day.
