How Big Are You?
Architectural Association, London
The proposed event space is a testing ground through which to interrogate the scales of corporal, human impact. As we scream, tweet and embrace, we grow. As crowds fragment into panic, we shrink. The architecture adapts by organising simultaneous functions and engaging with the body. Fabric scenographies - recycled from a pneumatic formwork - are suspended and choreographed from a concrete and timber hybrid shell.
Material testing played a vital role in the development of this theoretical project. We tested the inflatable fabric formwork of the concrete and timber hybrid shell at a small scale; we sewed the fabric dome to understand how the formwork should be patterned; we prototyped the grid-shell node at 1:1 to better understand its technical performance. In place of CGI renders, we photographed scale models to capture the project’s spatial qualities.
